The Best Flying, the most fun and the most breathtaking views - it has to be a Microlight! (Think "powered hang-glider".)

The Sydney Microlight Centre Pty Ltd (ABN 67 132 461 780) started operating in the early 1990s under the leadership of CFI and then-owner Paul Haines. Paul took an idea and turned it into one of the most respected microlight training schools on the Australian east coast. In the process he became something of a legend amongst microlight pilots. In 2008 ownership of the centre changed hands but the intention to continue Paul's good work by offering the best standard of weight-shift microlight aircraft flight training remains unchanged. We still do trial introductory flights which allow everyone to experience the thrill of flying. For those who wish to proceed further, we provide pilot training all the way from Pilot Certificate, Passenger Endorsement, Radio and Cross-Country right through to Instructor Ratings.

My name is Ned McIntosh and I am currently owner and CFI of the centre. Paul trained me as his Senior Instructor several years before I took over the management and ownership of the school. Just like Paul, I have a passion for flying and it has been a big part of my life. My first flight in a glider was in 1963 at the naval air station at Nowra. I have some sailplane time from the early 1970s and did my first skydive in December 1971, retiring from skydiving in 1998 after over 2000 jumps. The urge to be in the air was still there and I took up flying microlights in 1998, three-axis flying (in Jabirus) in 2007; I now instruct on both types. One way or another, I've been in the air for quite a while now, and I intend to be flying for quite a while longer. Furthermore, I have a genuine commitment to furthering the cause of weight-shift microlight aircraft because I believe they are the best-kept secret in recreational aviation. If you have a dream of  flying your own aircraft, the Sydney Microlight Centre Pty Ltd can help you realise that dream.

We are still Sydney's closest Hang Gliding Federation of Australia (HGFA) approved microlight training facility, located at Illawarra Regional Airport, Albion Park Rail, just over an hour's drive south of Sydney - right at the southern end of the M1 motorway (formerly called the F6 Freeway). As other airports around Sydney are put under increasing pressure by urban encroachment, our airport is becoming a principal focus of recreational aviators. Our facilities are superb, and the views from the air are simply stunning.

The Sydney Microlight Centre Pty Ltd is also a factory sales and service centre for the Australian-built Airborne series of microlight aircraft. The latest  Rotax 912-powered microlights from Airborne take performance to a new standard and are a delight to fly - they take all the hard work out of flying and go a long way on a tank of fuel. Our current training machine is a 912-powered Airborne Edge XT, fitted with the Cruze wing. This is a truly great aeroplane with excellent factory service and support.

We sell and recommend Airborne microlights, Rotax spare parts, Microair radios and transponders, Lynx intercoms, Icaro helmets  as well as flight instruments, flying suits, fuel-testers and many other accessories. If we don't have it we can direct you to someone who does.We also advise doing some Internet research before you buy. Shop smart and check prices before you buy.

The Illawarra region is the perfect environment in which to learn to fly. The scenery is stunning. We have magnificent beaches, the Wollongong area itself, Lake Illawarra, and the escarpment to the west, seen from the air, offers some of  the most beautiful views in Australia. When the whales head north in early winter, our aircraft offer unparalleled views of these ocean mammals as they breach and spout. No matter what time of year, there is always something interesting to see.

It's an unforgettable experience!
